1: I do not necessarily feel that any one species is superior to others and I use European spruce, Engelmann spruce, Lutz spruce, Sitka spruce, Red spruce, and Western Red Cedar. Due to the individual nature of the medium I prefer not to make general statements about the resultant tonal effects. I have very strict criteria for the selection of soundboard material and will only use premier quality pieces that meet my exceedingly high standards.
2: While the top wood is much more important to the tone of a guitar than the wood used for the back and sides, these parts do make an audible difference. I have a wide selection of back and side sets that I have personally selected and seasoned in my climate controlled shop. Other than the more traditional woods (Indian rosewood, Brazilian rosewood, Maple, Mahogany, and Cypress) I have various other woods available (Zircote, Wenge, Black Limba, Lacewood, Osage Orange, Walnut, etc.) that are not as frequently used. Many of these woods are not customarily used due to an assortment of reasons such as material scarcity and historical precedent. In my opinion most woods can be used to construct a high quality instrument and a good portion of the decision in back and side woods can be made on aesthetic grounds.
